Employee Retention through Intrinsic Coaching™

Nationally, the turnover rate in Healthcare services is 19.6% (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Our organization boasts a 3% turnover rate. How do we manage to retain our employees when other healthcare facilities are experiencing major losses in personnel? A large part is in how we treat our employees. Our nationally award winning T.A.G.(Thanks, Appreciation and Gratitude) Team and Recognition program starts us on the right path, but adding Intrinsic Coaching™ has given us a powerful new tool and additional opportunities for our employees to be successful, according to Human Resources Director Lori Dudeck, RN.

Overall, we know that most of our employees want to be successful, but don't always have the tools to accomplish this at work. Employees, for the most part, want to do well, perform well, retain their job. Unfortunately, employees sometimes have communication problems, personality conflicts, personal issues that get in the way of their work performance. Intrinsic Coaching™ is the methodology that allows us to work with all of this, to really work with the whole person.

With an Intrinsic Coach™ asking employees what they want that’s truly important to them and how they want to make their workplace successful has raised the overall retention rate of employees. Employees who receive a formal Step 3 Performance Improvement are required to meet with an Intrinsic Coach™ to discuss the PI and anything else they feel will help move the employee towards retention. Regina Welch has been using the Intrinsic Coaching™ methodology with employees in the Performance Improvement process now for 2 years. She has coached over 40 employees towards job success. At this time the organization has yet to lose a single employee who has received Intrinsic Coaching™.

The cost of recruitment, training and maintaining employees is a huge expense. Why not coach current employees towards success? With Intrinsic Coaching™, La Porte Regional Health System has been able to accomplish this. The benefits are not only changes made by the employee at work, Welch sees the application at home and in employees personal and social lives as well.
